Sailing week social and sailing events
Dear BSC members,
We are looking forward to welcoming you all to Sailing Week 2019, with busy sailing and social programmes to enjoy.
On Saturday 3rd August we are hosting a Laser Open Meeting under our own and very capable OOD Richard Benson. There will be a series of races and all club laser sailors can test their metal against the visiting competitors. Volunteers for boat crew, support duties and catering are very welcome, or just come along to watch the spectacle in the bay.
Sunday 4th August will see a cruise North to the Farnes, for moored craft and the more intrepid dinghy sailors. We will also re-run the Safety and Course Laying updates for those who could not make the May pre-season briefings.
On Monday and Tuesday there will be unofficial, non-training, “just for fun” activities for our cadets, arranged by James and Tom Mackie and Simon Hayward. Weather permitting there will be a Cadet Bonfire (small) and BBQ on the evening of Tuesday 6th August, with adults very welcome to BYO BBQ after the cadets have eaten. You will appreciate that all cadets must be accompanied by a responsible adult for all these events.
Our shortened Sailing Week starts on Wednesday 7th August with the Newton Picnic setting sail at 11am. That evening sees our guest talk followed by pizza and salad supper. This year we are excited to tell you that David Dobbin will be talking on St Cuthbert’s Gospel. There will also be gin tasting from the Commodore’s collection!
Thursday and Friday 8th and 9th August will see the sailing races commence in earnest, with busy morning and afternoon sessions. Please sign up for duties on the Sailing Week Board in the clubhouse, as without officers and crew the races can’t run. Coffee duties also need volunteers but soup and sandwiches are accounted for each day, served at 12 noon.
Thursday is our traditional Quiz Night complete with coffee and cake and Friday is Film Night and a double-header! Get your circus skills ready for our family film “The Greatest Showman”. Takeaway curry can be ordered for the interval before we show the Commodore’s favourite: “Withnail and I” (parental advisory!).
Saturday 10th August reverses the usual proceedings because the tides require RACING IN THE MORNING with SANDCASTLES (THEME ‘THE MOON LANDINGS’) AND BEACH GAMES IN THE AFTERNOON, culminating with Tug of War and Prizegiving at 6.30pm. The Regatta BBQ theme is ‘Favourite Cartoon Characters’ with lots of scope for Disney, anime and DC & Marvel superheroes.
Please use the sign-up sheets that are now in the Clubhouse. We are looking forward to seeing you all and having a great week!
James and Laura
